By way of context, I am a plaintiffs'-side FDCPA attorney. My partner and I sue Boyd's clients and other, less fortunate debt collectors for a living. I'm leaving this review mostly because my recent experiences with other defense counsel have made me nostalgic for Boyd's particular mix of competence and professionalism.

No other defense counsel holds us to as low of settlements as Boyd does, and very few others are able to competently defend their clients at all while being as time-efficient and thoroughly ethical as Boyd somehow manages. Moreover, Boyd has made a good deal of what I'd call "bad" law at the appellate level, and I have to give him credit for the skill his success in doing so demonstrates.

I look forward to the next time we meet in a status conference, and I hope that someday we disagree strongly enough about a legal theory that we end up in the Sixth. Not that that's likely--Boyd is smart enough to end loser cases early and cheaply, and the only time I've we've ever disagreed about whether a case was a winner or a loser, it was Boyd who came out on top in motions practice, and in such a convincing fashion that he actually persuaded us he was right.

I know a lot of clients think they need a mad dog to represent them. And for some debt collectors who utterly disregard the law, that may be true. But if you're a debt collector who's trying his best and you get slapped with a lawsuit anyway, Boyd is your best bet for minimizing the damage. I can't speak for other plaintiffs' counsel, but I know my partner and I are much more likely to respond to reasoned persuasion than bluster and threats. And Boyd is the rare FDCPA-defense attorney who's so good at persuading--and so confident in his ability to go to the mat if persuasion fails--that he doesn't feel the need to stoop to such tactics.
