I grew up in this little town and got to see it grow and transform into what it is today. I've come to this library well before and after the renovations. They did such a great job with the rehab! It is so much bigger, they offer so many more books and videos, parking,
many desks with people eager to help, a plethora of areas to sit and enjoy reading quietly, a multitude of computers to use if needed, a drive thru, all amenities for the disabled.. Including an elevator, automatic doors, and ample parking. Even the modernistic architecture and open air design is something worth coming to look at. They built large fasades into the walls upstairs in the kids area. Which my kids love to personally see/ There is a mini train to climb on, puzzles, hand puppets, toys galore, and so much more for the little ones to explore. Easily one of my favorite local libraries especially nowadays.

Lots for toddlers to do and a clean, relaxing vibe for care givers. Walk into the children's section of the library and it feels focused and whimsical. There's a whole room devoted just to kids, puzzles, books, toys, puppets, a play kitchen set and other kinetic activities. Great place to come in winter for kiddos to burn off some energy and play, as well as curl up with a book and read. We spent an hour here and my two year old daughter was never bored once.

A very nice library but too noisy, is how I would sum it up. A few years ago they ran a survey to ask patrons if we wanted to library to stay a library or if we wanted to turn it into some kind of community center. I voted for the library to stay the library. I think my team lost. I can appreciate that people with kids want a safe place for their kids to run around screaming at the top of their lungs. I can appreciate that people without home internet might want to use the library to listen to media and communicate via voip. I can appreciate that the library may seem like a nice comfy place to chat on one's cell phone. I can appreciate the many uses people might find for a clean, safe space with adequate parking (less adequate since half the parking lot has been occupied with who knows what since forever) which KFL is. What I miss is a quiet environment for reading and studying, where the written word is valued both for the information it contains and for its beauty. In other words, I miss the days of Mr. Victoria. In any case, this focus on other stuff seems to be a general trend in libraries and KFL has probably done a better job than most of maintaining some semblance of still being a library. However, when I think of Eco's novel "The Name of the Rose" where a librarian murders people to keep them from acquiring forbidden knowledge from books, it seems kind of ironic.

My Daughter loves story time here and it’s really helped her with her social skills as well getting her ready for Kindergarten ! The librarians are always so helpful and kind and there is always so many activities to choose from throughout the week! I Love going to the Kent Free Library!
