Just another fake Christian, who chose a high school graduation to pass his archaic thoughts on to much brighter human beings who are far more evolved than this dumb ape. I hired this firm as an engineering consultant for my manufacturing business (we make pre-rusted trombones, Mississippi-style birdbaths, etc.) While I appreciated their turn-key approach and extensive knowledge of and compliance with ISO standards, I had a strange interaction with ol’ “Jim.”

After a lengthy day of finalizing our factory master plan with the project managers, I went to use their restroom where I hear someone in a stall with the door half open, sobbing, while softly singing along to the song Boy Problems by Carly Rae Jepsen playing from their phone.

I tried my best to do my business and leave them alone, but as I went to wash my hands, the sobbing grew louder and more sorrowful. I looked up into the mirror and saw him in the reflection, slouched into the corner between the stall and toilet. Our eyes met for a moment as he blurted “what’s worse, losing a lover or losing a friend?”

I felt bad for him but I was caught off guard and didn’t know what to say. I went over to use the Dyson Airblade hanging right by his stall and he asked me “is love ever wrong?” He went on to tell me about how he fell in love with a man Javier, at a Sandals Beach Resort. Javier wanted JL to leave his wife so they could live at Sandals, forever, but Jim didn’t know what to do.

Jim was raised to believe that loving another man was like, wrong or whatever, and also he loved his wife. But deep in his soul, he knew he was living a lie. He longed for the life he could be living – the sand under his feet, all-inclusive recreational amenities, and an endless pour of both the Robert Mondavi and his beautiful Javier.

I wanted to comfort the man, but this was getting to be a little too intimate for my cool midwestern sensibility. I started tossing my keys from hand to hand and said “Jim, loving another man is not wrong and don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise, and its okay to cry, but I need you to sign off on my facility's safety plan so I can skedaddle on outta here, kay? Take a few minutes if you need to but let's git to gittin.”

That was the last time I ever saw him. I’d like to think he made it to that Sandals, and if not I know that someday, he will.
