I chose this firm in large part because they are supposed to be experts with a particular software our company had decided to go with. Upon the initial consultation, we figured our tax prep costs would double or so, but we figured that would be okay given the additional expertise we were getting.

When it came to tax time, our numbers weren’t quite what I expected, and I asked quite a few questions because I wanted to A) make sure I understood my taxes and my numbers, and B) make sure there weren’t any mistakes. We had a rocky start with the first round of drafts and had to go on extension. The final drafts were done a short time later, but when I again wanted to ask questions about a few numbers I didn’t understand, the accountant’s attitude was basically “Here are your taxes. We’re done.” I never got to have my issues resolved but figured, hey, they are experts and know what they’re doing, right? So, I went ahead and filed them, and our total accounting bill for the year was nearly QUINTUPLE what it had been for previous years accounting expenses.

Fast forward past the following year, and the numbers really don’t line up from one tax year to the next and start to become a significant problem. There are several serious issues with the return FKCO prepared and mistakes where numbers on the tax forms clearly did not match the reports I provided to them and were simply wrong. Future taxes had to be adjusted and corrected to fix the errors. It has been a frustrating and time-consuming process, that certainly could have been avoided if they would have been less arrogant and more receptive to me simply asking questions.

Bottom line, if you are the type of person (or corporation) who just wants your taxes done to get it over with and you don’t want to bother reviewing them, then by all means use FKCO. However, if you want to understand your numbers, review your returns before sending them in, have your questions answered thoroughly, and not pay through the nose, then I suggest you look elsewhere for expert advice.
