My experience with Steven Cohen and Dennis Cole from Beers, Hamerman, Cohen & Burger was a nightmare. I first met Mr. Cohen on March 1, 2022. All paperwork was accessible to him prior to April 15, but an extension was filed due to pending K-1’s. My account was assigned to Mr. Cole who told me in the spring and the fall I was entitled to refunds even though I expressed concerns on each occasion that I owed money. Weeks later, I received state and federal bills which included interest due and late fees. How could he not investigate my concern? How could he not review my previous return if it was prepared by another firm? He would have discovered his mistake if he just did his job. We spoke again and he reluctantly called my old accountant on my suggestion. He called me back immediately and without an apology told me I owed the money. I asked how this could happen and he told me he didn’t have enough time to do my return. If he couldn’t do his job properly, why didn’t he find someone else in the firm who could? Adding insult to injury, I was charged nearly $5,000, an exorbitant amount of money. Needless to say, I was very upset and called Mr. Cohen immediately. He admitted the mistake and we agreed he would send me a check for any penalties. SIX WEEKS LATER, I received a check for a fraction of the amount he promised.
What do you call an accountant who files such an inept return where penalties are assessed? What do you call an accountant who files such a poor return and also charges through the nose? What do you call an accountant who sends a check for nearly a thousand dollars less than what he promised? What would you call an accountant who did all these things? You decide for yourself.
