Went in with no real estate, children, or too many assets and the initial conversation I had I was told because it was an amicable divorce with no contentions, all I would most likely have to pay was the $1,000 minimum. Yet one month later that had racked up over $1,700 in charges and the only item to show for it was a three-page paper that wasn’t even done correctly, forcing me to have to take a second half-day to even get the case started. I like the idea of weekly meetings for communication but they never added any value and an email letting me know next steps would have more than sufficed. After such a pricey billings for no real service, I asked for my case to be closed and my $4,000 retainer to be returned, yet they charged another $250 just to return the retainer. Some great uses of my money as follows:

$200 just for my attorney to reiterate in a 30min meeting exactly what was told to me in my initial intake.
$50 for sending a paralegal an email that we shouldn’t have the weekly meeting as there was nothing to discuss given they hadn’t sent me any paperwork.
$50 for a text asking for a second meeting to be canceled for the exact same reason.
$200 for a review of my original petition that was obviously not reviewed as it had the incorrect signature and did not state my proper asset class.
$50 for them to send an email telling me where the courthouse was.
$250 for returning my retainer. I even sent an email asking why so much to just return my money and of course I never received a response.

At minimum $800 of needless charges, which again, was over $2,000 for just a three-page paper that wasn’t even correct. Obviously significantly more than the $1,000 minimum I was originally told was the most likely for this case given, again, no dispute on assets, no children, and no real property.

I highly recommend that unless your divorce is complex, please represent yourself pro se. The courthouse and law office located close by has all of the resources you need to start and finish the divorce yourself and it is a very easy process. Free classes regularly I would highly recommend. Do not do business with this firm if your case is straightforward as it is akin to highway robbery.
