3 stars for offering free consultations, but then canceling within 12 hours (response attached). After stumbling across Dominique’s CPA business and researching a bit online, I thought she might be a good fit for me and my business. I spent time filing out an info form and scheduled a free consultation that was advertised on the website.. and then received a cancellation email a few hours later. While I appreciate the responsiveness, the unwillingness to either request more information via email before canceling OR just honoring the free consultation promoted on the website and making it a super quick call, left me feeling off given the website mentioning start ups and small businesses so I wanted to share this feedback.

Background on me and some of the information I provided on my form used to schedule the appointment: I’m creating a business and am looking for a CPA to ensure I do everything legally partly because my main occupation is remote and I travel very frequently and need help with taxes in different states. I work in fund accounting and have plenty of out of pocket resources to get my business off the ground and also mentioned on the form that I was looking for someone I could grow my business with for years to come (I don’t just want a couple months of tax advice).

Note that the form asked how much revenue the business brings in with the minimum of 500k.

As a new entrepreneur, and as someone who has worked alongside entrepreneurs and in corporate environments for over 10 years, I would suggest stating the selection criteria and revenue minimum clearly on the website. Another idea is charging for consultations - I assume mine was canceled because it seemed like a waste of time, so charge a consultation fee instead of picking and choosing who is worthy of one. This would filter out those who are not as serious. I would have happily paid for a consultation, and might have brought this company a good amount of money if they would have gone through with the consultation and I was to select them as my CPA. Not sure why it matters how established a business is or how much revenue they currently bring in, as most CPAs I’m familiar with charge dependent on their services, not a percentage of what their clients make. Just state the pricing options and let potential clients decide whether or not they want to pay it , and if you offer a free service you should honor it or clearly state the selection criteria.
