I was directed to Jane Stobbs for an initial consultation on bankruptcy. I was directed to her through my legal insurance. From the very beginning it was clear she had no real interest in my case nor was she sympathetic to my situation. She kept reiterating that she did engage in litigation and that if there was adversarial action I would have to find new representation. This was fine and I was perfectly understanding. However, what bothered me is the lack of professionalism in communication. She is very clearly not sympathetic to the difficult position someone seeking bankruptcy is in and it comes across in her demeanor. Additionally, at the end of our consultation, she informed me that before I make a decision I should seek a second opinion. She had specifically said that she had not made a decision whether or not to retain my case but I should seek out a second opinion and then return to discuss it further. This was less than truthful. My meeting was yesterday afternoon, I had just contacted my insurance to direct me to a second opinion and then she sent me a letter of nonengagement stating she would not take my case. I am sure she is fine with wills, but she is clearly not interested in bankruptcy clients, aside from the easiest cases that will require the least amount of work.
